Readings with LightEvery tarot deck begins with a card that is, strictly speaking, not first at all. The Fool carries the number 0 — before beginnings, outside the sequence. A young traveller steps toward the edge of a cliff, face turned to the sky, a small bundle over one shoulder and a white rose in hand. A little dog leaps at his heels — warning him, or cheering him on. He does not look down.
It would be easy to read this as carelessness. The tradition reads it as something braver: the willingness to begin before you feel ready.
Why the Fool matters most
The Major Arcana is often described not as twenty-two separate cards but as one continuous story — the Fool's Journey — and the Fool is the one walking it. Every other Major card is something that happens to him.
He meets the Magician and the High Priestess and learns that there are two kinds of knowing — skill and intuition. The Empress and the Emperor show him nurture and structure, the two hands that raise us. The Lovers ask him to choose; the Wheel of Fortune reminds him that not everything is his to choose. Death teaches him that endings clear ground. The Tower takes from him everything he built on poor foundations — and the Star, immediately after, shows him that hope survives demolition. By the time he reaches the World, the journey is complete.
And then, being the Fool, he steps off the next cliff and begins again. The zero is not a rank — it is a circle.
Light and shadow
In its light, the Fool is beginnings, spontaneity, innocence, and trust — the fresh page, the yes said before every answer is in. In its shadow, the same energy turns to naivety and recklessness: leaping to avoid looking, mistaking impulse for instinct.
When the Fool appears in your reading
The Fool rarely tells you what to do. He asks a quieter question: what would you begin if you trusted yourself? Drawn at the start of something, he blesses the leap. Drawn in the middle of confusion, he suggests the beginner's eyes you have stopped using. Either way, he is the deck's reminder that every one of the seventy-eight cards was, at some point, a first step.
