Tarot is a deck of 78 cards, each carrying a symbol, archetype, or scene drawn from centuries of Western esoteric tradition. The cards are not magic, and they do not contain hidden knowledge about your life. What they do contain is a rich visual language that can act as a mirror — a way of externalising what you already sense, and finding words for feelings that resist ordinary language.
A typical tarot deck is split into two sections:
- The Major Arcana — 22 cards depicting universal archetypes such as The Fool, The Lovers, The Tower, and The World. These represent big themes: life transitions, inner forces, turning points.
- The Minor Arcana — 56 cards divided into four suits (Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles), each representing a domain of life: creativity and energy; emotions and relationships; thought and conflict; material reality and body.
In a reading, cards are drawn and laid out in a spread — a pattern where each position holds a specific meaning. A three-card spread might look at past, present, and future. A Celtic Cross spread opens ten positions, from the heart of the situation to unconscious influences and likely outcome.
How an AI-guided reading works
In Readings with Light, the cards are drawn randomly, and the spread positions are fixed. Your question and the cards are sent to Claude, Anthropic's AI, which generates an interpretation personalised to your question. The AI is not reading your future — it is helping you think about your present, using the card meanings and spread positions as a structured framework for reflection.
The reading is always for reflection only. Trust your own response to it more than the words themselves.
